TEAMWORK

ABOUT US

I'm, Jill Dalton, owner of Cozy Home & Pet Care in Jupiter, FL. We provide daily and overnight services for your pets. I have a passion for animals and couldn't imagine my life without them. I am very involved as an animal welfare advocate.

Years ago, I was devastated by losing Babes, our beautiful Lhasa Apso. Recently, I've gone through the death of Harley, our handsome orange Tabby.  I don't know which is harder, the finality of death or the anxiety one goes through not knowing if your pet is in harms way.

I would like to try and help other people find their missing family pets. I think the best solution and exposure is definitely online and distributing posters. Please make sure you e-mail this site to everyone in your address book. I hope this website will help you find your missing loved one, ASAP.

HOW TO PREVENT YOUR DOG FROM GETTING LOST

  • Be sure your yard is securely fenced.
  • Always keep your dog with a collar and tags.
  • Use a "Sharpie" (permanent marker) and write your phone number on the collar in case the tag falls off.
  • It's not very expensive at all to microchip and it doesn't hurt the dog. It takes about 5 minutes.
  • If your utility meters are inside the dogs area, post a sign warning the meter readers, or better yet, if possible, put up a partial gate behind the meter to keep your pets from accessing that part of the yard.
  • Take your dog for walks around your neighborhood often, that can help him get familiar with his surroundings and if lost, find his way home, and if your neighbors know your dog, they might bring him or her home.

PASS OUT AS MANY FLYERS AS POSSIBLE. MANY DOGS ARE FOUND, BECAUSE OF FLYERS.

MICROCHIPPING YOUR DOG

In a few words a dog microchip is the size of a grain of rice inserted under the dog's skin. If you are feeling sorry for your pet consider it being like a rabies shot. It will sting a little but it is for its own safety. It is your pets permanent id tag. It will not fall off no matter what.

When a vet, or a kennel, or the pound encounters a dog they routinely "scan" the dog with a handheld device that can pick up the id from the chip and give them the info then need to contact you. Scanning is completely painless. They don't even really have to touch the dog, just wave a wand near your pet's back or belly. Then they will call you to come pick up your baby.

IF YOU HAVE LOST A DOG

Stay calm and confident. Most dogs are found soon after they get out. You neeto be thinking clearly, and you need to be recruiting help and gathering information. Letting your emotions get away from you can cause you make mistakes and can frighten people you meet who might otherwise be helpful.

If you have completed a thorough search of the area within a few blocks of where your dog was last seen but have not located your dog, it is time to take your search to the next level. Several people may have seen him or her, or somebody might have already rescued your pet. In this case posters are very effective.

  • Print posters, and post them at the entrances to your neighborhood and those nearby. Also post them at intersections, take them to vet clinics, pet related businesses (pet shops, groomers, dog trainers), and animal shelters. Your poster should ALWAYS have a PHOTO of your dog that could make a difference between finding it or not.
  • You will find links on this page to website you can place posting of lost dogs, use them. The first couple of week are critical for a successful rescue. You can also put a poster on the back of your vehicle. Think of this as a marketing campaign, the more you advertise, more chances for success. And you are looking for ONE person that has found your dog and might be looking for a poster.
  • While your postings are out, walk around the area, talk to people and hand out flyers with a picture of your dog. Most people are usually compassionate in these situations, specially if they have dogs of their own. They will keep an eye out for you.
  • If you live near a greenbelt, chances are your dog had gone out for a little adventure in the woods and got lost. Check that greenbelt carefully. Calling your dog while your are in the greenbelt might help scare other animal away and lead your pet towards you. Do not expect your dog to bark in response, as it is probably scared and doesn't want to call attention of predators like Coyotes.
  • Check the FOUND ads on local papers as well as on lost dog sites every day.
  • A pet detective can also be an option. They usually have tracker dogs that are trained and can follow the scent of your dog.
  • If it rains, check to see if your posters are still in good shape.

Rescue Organizations could be also where your pet ended up. Contact these rescue groups and check their websites on adoptable dogs. Your pup might have been put up for adoption.

If it has been a while you lost your dog, don't lose hope. If someone got it, chances are he will escape again. I've seen cases of people finding their dogs 8 months later even at the pound. Most animal shelter staff will NOT refer to any lost dog posting left there when they pick up a new animal. Calling is also NOT effective. Please go to your city animal shelter to check if your dog is there at least twice a week. You will be surprised how many pure breeds and small dogs are found and taken to shelters.

IF YOU HAVE FOUND A DOG

Check for postings of lost dogs around the area you found the animal, vet clinics, animal shelters, pet shops, also check the papers and web.

  • You can also take the dog to a vet clinic to check if it is microchipped. They will scan it for free.
  • Make posters with photo and your contact number and place them at the above places.
  • Many news papers will let you place a found ad on the classified section for free.
  • If you can't keep the dog until the owner shows up, there are organizations like The Humane Society and other rescue groups that will put it for adoption.
  • Taking the dog to the Animal Shelter should be the last resource, as they euthanize it after a few days it hasn't been picked up by the owner or adopted.
